Boxing Day 26th December 2008

What is Boxing Day?
Boxing Day is the day after Christmas day, celebrated on 26th December every year.

The Origin of Boxing Day : The name 'Boxing Day' originates from the tradition of putting gifts in boxes for the less fortunate.

Some call it as the Feast of St. Stephen, the first Christian martyr. St. Stephen was one of the seven original deacons of the Christian Church who were ordained by the Apostles to care for widows and the poor. For the success of his preaching and his devotion to Christ, St. Stephen was stoned to death by a mob. As he died, he begged God not to punish his killers.

Boxing Day dates back to past centuries when it was the custom for the wealthy to give gifts to employees or to people in a lower social class, most especially to household servants and other service personnel.

Where is boxing day celebrated?
Boxing day is known to have began in Great Britain then later passed on to other English countries such as Canada, Australia and New Zealand...but not in USA.
